Thai massage is an ancient healing art that has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. Originating in India it is based on Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga and arrived in Thailand around the same time as Buddhism.
Traditional Thai massage is vastly different to other, more Western forms of massage, it incorporates acupressure, energy work and yoga-like stretching into one treatment and has often been described as 'having someone do yoga to you', or 'lazy man's yoga'. The treatment is based on the theory that energy flows throughout every person. Energy pathways can easily become blocked or depleted due to the impacts of our lives and our environment. Manipulation of certain points along our energy pathways on the periphery of the body can help to ensure a healthy energy flow and in turn promote good health.
The treatment will leave you feeling deeply relaxed and revitalised. The benefits of Thai massage include increased circulation, flexibility and muscle tone. Thai massage is the perfect complement to any exercise routine and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The combination of stretching and acupressure has proven especially beneficial for individuals who find themselves stiff, sore and tired due to over-exertion, or from arthritis or other conditions which affect mobility. Thai massage stimulates the body's natural healing processes and has often helped people to recover lost range of motion, detoxify the body, boost the immune system, and prevent disease and injury by promoting flexibility and supple joints and ligaments.
Your initial treatment will be preceded by a consultation session, this can take anything from 5 to 20 minutes dependant on your reasons for seeking treatment and how detailed your medical history is. Thai massage is performed through clothes, as you will be stretched at various points throughout the treatment it is important to remember to wear comfortable clothing. The full treatment is carried out on a mattress on the floor. A full Thai massage treatment includes work on the legs, arms, abdomen, sides of the body and back. The exact areas will be discussed with you during your consultation.
