Massage can be described as being the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues (skin and muscle) using various techniques. It can be tailored to be remedial for specific muscular problems, oriented towards relaxation, or a combination of both.
The relaxation of the muscles which massage promotes can improve mobility and flexibility whilst easing the pain that tight muscles and stiffness can bring. Massage can help to induce a calm state of alertness whilst reducing mental stress. It can help to create a calm mind and promotes clear thinking.
The physically relaxing effects of massage can in turn help you to release stored mental stress. Research has shown that massage can help with the symptoms of anxiety and depression, muscle pain, high blood pressure, and PMS. It can also re-energise a person, and boost the immune system which fights infection.
Massage can either stimulate or soothe the nerve endings in the skin resulting in the release of endorphins (feel good hormones) in the brain. This release helps to promote relaxation and a sense of wellbeing. It can also help to reduce the harmful effects that stress can have on your body by reducing the amount of stress hormones which are circulating in your system.
Massage also stimulates an increase in blood and lymph circulation, in turn bringing more nutrients and oxygen to the soft tissues, and increasing the rate at which waste products are removed.
Your initial treatment will be preceded by a consultation session, this can take anything from 5 to 20 minutes dependant on your reasons for seeking treatment and how detailed your medical history is. After this the therapist will ask you to remove the appropriate clothing, this will vary dependant on the areas of the body which will be massaged. Rest assured you will never be asked to remove your underwear at any point. You will then proceed with the treatment, the full details of this will be discussed during your consultation. You will remain covered with a towel throughout the treatment and the only area of the body which will be exposed is the area which is being worked on at the time.
